My Bicycle Restoration
I bought this bicycle off craigslist for $10.00. I wanted to buy an old bike that I could customize without spending a lot of money. When I bought the bike it couldn't be ridden. The rear tire was flat and the inner tube was tangled in the back tire and chain. The rims & handlebars were extremely rusted. I didn't take any pics of the rusted handlebars, but they were just as bad as the fenders. The gears and brakes did not work. I first began removing the rust with steel pads and aluminum. I put some WD-40 on the steel wool and aluminum and it helped remove most of the rust. Then I used aluminum and Turtle Polish to remove the remaining rust and make the chrome shine. After doing that we stripped down the bike and in the process the part the causes the hub to shift gears broke, so I had to hunt down a duplicate. Thankfully after a few mishaps I was able to find the part on Ebay for under $10. The painting process took the most time. I sanded the frame and tried to sand the rusted rims, but that didn't help much. After doing so, I added the primer and then the paint. I then replaced the original decals with custom ones from www.DoItYourselfLettering.com. You can create your labels online and I received them within the week. I had to buy new brakes, tires, and inner tubes, so I ordered new ones on Amazon. After I completed all of the painting I put the bicycle together and took my first ride this past weekend. Now I just have to buy my basket and bell. I ordered my light on Ebay and I can't wait for it to get here!
